When I was five our family took a vacation to the Virgin Islands. I loved everything about the trip – from flying in a 22 seater plane from Puerto Rico to St. Croix, to swimming in the Caribbean Sea every day, to tasting tapioca pudding for the first time and to listening to the steel drum bands by the pool. One of my fav photos is of my dad holding my hand on the beach – he in his cool Raybans and me in my little girl bikini with ruffles on the bottom.

One night the band learned my name and played the calypso song Mary Ann. Every time I go to the beach I sing this song in my head.

By the way, the one thing I didn’t like about the trip was that I had left one of my favourite playthings behind – a small wheeled spaceship with a removable alien. How I had cried for weeks about my stupidity of not checking to make sure I had it packed up.

I searched the web for a version of Mary Ann and found this folksy one by Terry Gilkyson. Enjoy.

Because I’m a Mary Ann I thought I’d do a string of Mary Ann songs. The first is from The Temptations. I found this copy on Youtube – I love the scratchy vinyl. If you are expecting the Motown sound of the sixties, you’re going to be disappointed.

This week’s Mary song is Proud Mary. I know it’s a CCR song but I’m not a Creedence fan so you get the Ike and Tina Turner version. And because Tina Turner is fascinating to watch, you get the video version of the song. Man, her patter at the start of the song kind of summed up their relationship.

Your famous Mary for the week is Mary Cleave, the 10th woman in space on the Shuttle Atlantis.
